Wilson James is proud to announce that we have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2023 Security and Fire Excellence Awards in two categories: “Security Guarding Company of the Year over £30m Turnover,” and “Best Company to Work For.” We have also been shortlisted again in the “Inspiration in HR” category, our third consecutive year receiving this recognition and a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence in the field of Human Resources.

The SFEX Awards, widely regarded as a benchmark of excellence in the Security and Fire industries, honour organizations and individuals who have demonstrated outstanding performance and innovation in our sectors. The Inspiration in HR Award specifically acknowledges those who have made significant contributions to the field of Human Resources, setting new standards and inspiring others.

Under the leadership of our internal HR team, Wilson James has consistently strived to create a workplace environment that fosters growth, equality, and innovation. At Wilson James, our fundamental values revolve around improving the environment and creating positive societal outcomes. These principles are deeply ingrained in our organisational culture, and our sustainability strategy reflects our ambition to push the boundaries in reducing our environmental impact.

The release of our 2022 Carbon Output Report underscores our ongoing commitment to carbon efficiency. Throughout 2022 and the first half of 2023, significant investments have been made to strengthen our sustainability team, enhance our carbon monitoring and analysis tools, and establish an Executive Board Sub Committee.

These foundational initiatives will serve as the basis for assessing our current targets in 2023, with the ultimate goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and attaining Net Zero status by 2050.

Among the 2022 report highlights include:

  • We reduced our carbon emissions by 24,472.03 KgCO2e compared to 2020 levels, with our most impactful reduction emanating from an 11.6% reduction in fleet emissions which makes up 80% of the total carbon emissions we currently capture
  • Our data shows a 24,472.03 KgCO2e reduction in emissions compared to 2020 baseline, representing a 2.9% reduction in total emissions for the scope of our reporting
  • We are obtaining external GHG performance data assurance from a CDP approved standard in preparation for commitment to the SBTi Near-Term and Net Zero targets.

It’s up to Wilson James as a company to help our people make smart decisions. Which is why we’re constantly developing new sustainable solutions that harness complex data and empower our people to make intelligent and sustainable choices. Join us on our journey to carbon neutrality by 2040 and attaining Net Zero status by 2050.

The Herd in the City Art Trail is officially open in Essex and Wilson James is delighted to contribute to this year’s programme.

For 2023, 46 large elephant sculptures and 72 baby elephants—each of them wholly unique—have been positioned around South-end-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness. Each large elephant is sponsored by a business and can be digitally “tagged” by visitors.

Wilson James is a long-time supporter of Havens Hopsice and this is our second time participating in public art events in aid of the organisation. Visitors to our head office may have met Rocky, the friendly hare greeting guests at the office door, who was part of the 2021 campaign Hares About Town.

This year our companion pachyderm is Don’t Feed the Birds, who you can meet along with its friends here.

If you are a frequent visitor to our head office, do make sure stop by to visit our elephant! Each scan of its unique raises donations for Havens Hospice, in advance of a final charity auction in September.

Last week, Wilson James was honoured once again to be invited to the Natural History Museum annual summer party.

To open the evening’s festivities, NHM Director Dr Doug Gurr gave a speech to all the guests gathered in the beautiful Hintze Hall.

With Hope the blue whale taking centre stage, suspended majestically above us, Dr Gurr started his speech with a heartfelt appreciation for the whole team at Wilson James. After encouraging everyone to cheer their support, he went on to comment ‘Wilson James, the team that has all of our backs, all of the time’.

As is tradition at this celebration, the Museum also presented their highly coveted ‘NHM Hero’ awards.

The recipients of the awards are voted for by the entire workforce at the Museum, and 5 well deserving staff received an award in recognition of their outstanding service to the Museum. The 5 recipients were shortlisted from no less than 75 nominations!

In what was undoubtedly a standout moment of my tenure at the Museum, when Dr Gurr announced first place, the name he called was none other than our very own WJ Security Officer Bhojbahadur Gharti (Bhoj).

The applause that followed was rapturous and seemed to last forever. Such is the popularity of Bhoj who has been an integral member of our team since WJ commenced the contract back in in 2011.

This recognition is so well deserved, and testament to both Bhoj’s dedication to his exemplary customer service, and NHM’s commitment to an inclusive workplace where partnership is promoted as the heart of our joint service ethos.

Bhoj, you made us all very proud. Thank you for everything you do. It was such a wonderful moment to see your team celebrate with you.

WJ would also like to congratulate all the staff who were recognised for their contribution on the night.

Lastly, it would be amiss of me not to give special mention to our staff who were diligently working the event and keeping us all safe, Donald, Mahri, and the entire team. Thank you.

Peter Griffin

Museums Consortium Director – Wilson James

Charlie Rhodes, Building Logistics Operative at Wilson James (WJ) has been nominated as a finalist in the Supported Employee of the Year category in the Somerset Education Business Partnership Awards 2023.

Charlie, who works for the Construction Logistics team on Hinkley Point C, joined Wilson James through the Supported Traineeship Programme, which supports individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or an Education, Health and Care plan (ECHP), providing them with employment experience and training in readiness for the workplace.

Wilson James is a proud supporter of the Supported Traineeship Programme, as part of our partnership with the Mechanical and Electrical Alliance on Hinkley Point C.

The 10-week programme which is aimed at 18–24-year-olds sees individuals receive a mix of work readiness training and time spent learning on the job through project placements with a contract partner with a view to securing permanent employment.

Charlie successfully completed a 5-week traineeship with Wilson James, following which WJ offered him full-time employment.

As one of the UK’s leading construction logistics suppliers, Wilson James is keenly aware of the challenges facing the construction sector and the growing skills gap. Therefore, encouraging the younger generation into the industry and supporting initiatives such as the Supported Traineeship Programme is of huge importance.

Alongside Charlie, WJ has also recently offered full time employment to several other individuals who joined on a placement through the Supported Traineeship Programme, all of whom are now excelling in their new roles and have started their journey towards rewarding careers in the construction industry.

Donna Brown, Skills Development Manager, Hinkley Point C, said: “”I wanted to say a huge and sincere thank you to you and your team at Wilson James for providing such a fantastic placement experience for Charlie. The 10-week programme has come to an end, but I’m thrilled to hear that Charlie has been offered permanent work – this really is the most amazing outcome for him.

“This programme really does change lives, not just for the individual involved but also their wider family. It’s thanks to employers such as yourselves who are committed to investing in young people, and to ensuring that the Project is a more inclusive and diverse place to work, that this programme has been such a success.”

Wilson James has today published its 2022 Gender Pay Report.

The statutory report, an annual publication for employers with 250 or more employees, analyses the difference between the average pay of male and female employees across all roles, and the percentage of male and female employees across Wilson James’s business in the UK.

Since the introduction of our first Gender Pay Report in 2019, Wilson James has taken significant strides forward in becoming a truly diverse and inclusive business. In the last year the company has reduced its mean pay gap from 8.8% to 7% and its median pay gap from 14% to 5%. The UK median Gender Pay Gap is 14.9%.

Within the Wilson James Gender Bonus Gap, while the percentage of women receiving bonuses has significantly increased from 6% in 2021 to 14% in 2022, the mean bonus gap has also risen by 6 percentage points. This gap in mean bonuses is largely driven by bonus schemes for colleagues in our Security sector where the workforce is significantly male dominated. Women joining the security team have the same access to the bonus scheme.

We have maintained strong focus on delivering our action plan and increasing the representation of women at all levels, right across our business. This commitment to inclusion is starting to create real change and we are seeing progress in our target areas with women now making up 28% in both the upper quartile and upper middle, an increase of 10 and 8 percentage points respectively.

Wilson James remains focused on building a business that is sustainable in every sense, improving diversity and inclusion across its operations. We are embracing our fledgling people networks, which include LGBTI, Disability and Race as well as Gender to give a genuine, companywide voice to all employees. We believe this will help us to understand barriers and work together to find innovative ways for women to both join us and build a long-term career at Wilson James.

At Wilson James part of our WJ Blueprint is to Grow Sustainability. This involves championing collaboration and idea sharing and continuously developing our sustainability model.

We are proud to announce that Wilson James has signed up to be a CO2nstructZero Business Champion by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) as part of Build UK members commitment to play their part in securing Net Zero carbon construction by 2050.

By signing up to become a Champion Wilson James has joined a growing number of companies who are:

  • Currently implementing strategies and policies at company level in line with Net Zero goals and the CO2nstructZero priorities for example use of electrical vehicle fleets.
  • Helping facilitate conversations with suppliers and clients around sustainability by adopting and maximising the use of modern methods of construction, retrofit or heat pumps.
  • Redefining the way sustainable buildings are delivered.
  • Showcasing projects and case studies which demonstrate modern methods of construction or other sustainable materials being used during developments.

Commenting on the appointment, Keith Winterflood, Managing Director for Construction, said: “It’s great to be part of the Build UK network and become a CO2nstructZero champion. Working together and transferring knowledge within the construction industry is key to its growth and sustainability. We’re looking forward to collaborating further with Build UK and other members to drive change that strengthens our sector.”
