Our commitment to fair employment practices and transparent negotiations

Wilson James would like to provide an update regarding the industrial action being undertaken by our security personnel at the Science Museum and Natural History Museum, who are valued employees and members of our outsourced arrangement with the Museums Consortium.

As a service provider recognised by the Living Wage Foundation, Wilson James is clear in its commitment to fair compensation for all employees. We work to engage in transparent and respectful negotiations with both our clients and union representatives to ensure that employee concerns are addressed constructively and with the utmost regard for their wellbeing and fair treatment.

Our security team members play an essential role in maintaining the safety and security of the museum’s collections, which are treasured elements of free-to-access public institutions. The decision by the museums to outsource services to Wilson James does not diminish the critical importance of our employees’ contributions to museum operations. We recognise their dedication and the vital part they play in the museum community, helping protect national treasures and ensure a welcoming environment for all visitors.

Wilson James acknowledges recent statements provided by the union, United Voices of the World (UVW), including claims related to the use of agency workers during the strikes. We want to clarify that, in adherence to our lawful employment practices, no agency workers will be engaged in duties that would otherwise be covered by our striking colleagues. We firmly believe the proposed prosecution by UVW lacks any factual or legal foundation, and we are fully confident in our compliance with applicable employment law.

In pursuit of a swift and constructive resolution, we are calling upon UVW to call off the industrial action and join us in a meaningful dialogue on union recognition. Such a dialogue would enable UVW to effectively represent its members in forthcoming pay negotiations, allowing us to collaboratively address pay adjustments for the coming year.

Wilson James remains fully committed to ensuring a secure, respectful, and fair working environment for all employees and stakeholders. Our priority is to achieve a balanced outcome that recognises the needs and contributions of our employees while upholding the quality of service at these important national institutions.

This statement outlines the steps we have taken, and will continue to take, to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking within our business and supply chains.

Modern slavery, in all its forms, including forced labour, child labour, and human trafficking, is a violation of fundamental human rights and a grave threat to the dignity and freedom of individuals worldwide. Empowering the next generation of aviation professionals with hands-on experience and expert training for passengers who require support, including those with reduced mobility.

In a groundbreaking initiative set to redefine the way Passenger Assistance Services are delivered within Aviation and Transport, Wilson James has proudly launched its Passenger Services Apprenticeship Programme at Heathrow Airport. This forward-thinking initiative is not just another training programme; it represents a strategic investment in the future of passenger experience, designed to attract, nurture, and develop the next generation of industry professionals.

The Power of Apprenticeships in Aviation

Apprenticeships have long been recognised as a powerful tool for bridging the gap between education and employment. They offer an invaluable opportunity for individuals to gain qualifications and hands-on experience while learning from seasoned professionals. In the aviation industry, where the nuances of passenger experience and the complexities of airport operations intersect, the need for such practical, immersive learning is more critical than ever.

Wilson James, in partnership with Locomotivation, has seized this opportunity to design and deliver a bespoke Aviation Passenger Service apprenticeship programme. This initiative is not just about filling roles; it’s about supporting the next generation of professionals who are as adept at understanding and enhancing the end-to-end passenger experience journey as they are at operating within the complex ecosystem of services and organisations at any airport.

A Partnership Built on Innovation

Wilson James is no stranger to pioneering efforts in the aviation sector. Since the launch of the Heathrow Academy in 2004, the company has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at enhancing passenger services and improving operational efficiency as a strategic partner to Heathrow Airport Ltd. This new apprenticeship programme is a natural extension of that legacy, combining Wilson James’ extensive industry knowledge with Locomotivation’s expertise in vocational training.

The partnership has culminated in an apprenticeship that blends specific aviation training with essential customer service skills. Over a 16-month period, apprentices will not only work in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment, based in one of the largest Passenger Assistance teams in the World, but also study towards a formal Customer Service Practitioner qualification. This dual approach ensures that participants emerge from the programme as well-rounded professionals ready to make significant contributions to the industry. Combined with Wilson James’ Assistance Service training, designed in collaboration with consumer representatives with lived experience, the Apprenticeship roles provide a leading edge introduction to delivering excellent experiences to this passenger segment.

Attracting New Talent: A Strategic Priority

In an industry as dynamic as aviation, attracting and retaining talent is crucial to enhancing passenger experience through human experience, alongside digitisation and automation. By offering a structured path into the aviation sector, Wilson James’ programme opens doors for individuals who might not have previously considered a career in the field. It also serves as a springboard for apprentices, providing them with the skills and experience needed to either build a long-term career with Wilson James in passenger services or transition into roles within airline or airport organisations, or the broader aviation ecosystem

Building a Centre of Excellence for Aviation Training

The launch of the Passenger Services Apprenticeship Programme for 18 local colleagues builds on Wilson James’ QNUK accredited training programme for all PRM colleagues. Our focus on passenger experience is building through our aspirations to establish a world-leading centre of excellence for consumer experience training for the International aviation sector and beyond.

By developing a continuous pipeline of talent through these apprenticeship cohorts, Wilson James aims to strengthen the UK’s aviation sector, ensuring it remains competitive on the global stage. The combination of expert training, hands-on experience, and a commitment to excellence will create a workforce that is not only skilled but also adaptable, ready to meet the evolving challenges of the industry.

A Bright Future Ahead

The launch of the Passenger Services Apprenticeship Programme at Heathrow marks a significant milestone for Wilson James, the Heathrow Academy, and the wider aviation industry. It’s a bold step towards creating a more resilient, skilled, and passenger-focused workforce, one that will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future of aviation. As this first cohort embarks on their journey, they carry with them the hopes of an industry in transition, one that is looking to the future with confidence, innovation, and a renewed commitment to excellence. With initiatives like this, the future of aviation is not just in good hands—it’s in the best hands possible.

At Wilson James, our fundamental values revolve around improving the environment and creating positive societal outcomes. These principles are deeply ingrained in our organisational culture, and our sustainability strategy reflects our ambition to push the boundaries in reducing our environmental impact.

The release of our 2022 Carbon Output Report underscores our ongoing commitment to carbon efficiency. Throughout 2022 and the first half of 2023, significant investments have been made to strengthen our sustainability team, enhance our carbon monitoring and analysis tools, and establish an Executive Board Sub Committee.

These foundational initiatives will serve as the basis for assessing our current targets in 2023, with the ultimate goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and attaining Net Zero status by 2050.

Among the 2022 report highlights include:

  • We reduced our carbon emissions by 24,472.03 KgCO2e compared to 2020 levels, with our most impactful reduction emanating from an 11.6% reduction in fleet emissions which makes up 80% of the total carbon emissions we currently capture
  • Our data shows a 24,472.03 KgCO2e reduction in emissions compared to 2020 baseline, representing a 2.9% reduction in total emissions for the scope of our reporting
  • We are obtaining external GHG performance data assurance from a CDP approved standard in preparation for commitment to the SBTi Near-Term and Net Zero targets.

It’s up to Wilson James as a company to help our people make smart decisions. Which is why we’re constantly developing new sustainable solutions that harness complex data and empower our people to make intelligent and sustainable choices. Join us on our journey to carbon neutrality by 2040 and attaining Net Zero status by 2050.

The Herd in the City Art Trail is officially open in Essex and Wilson James is delighted to contribute to this year’s programme.

For 2023, 46 large elephant sculptures and 72 baby elephants—each of them wholly unique—have been positioned around South-end-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness. Each large elephant is sponsored by a business and can be digitally “tagged” by visitors.

Wilson James is a long-time supporter of Havens Hopsice and this is our second time participating in public art events in aid of the organisation. Visitors to our head office may have met Rocky, the friendly hare greeting guests at the office door, who was part of the 2021 campaign Hares About Town.

This year our companion pachyderm is Don’t Feed the Birds, who you can meet along with its friends here.

If you are a frequent visitor to our head office, do make sure stop by to visit our elephant! Each scan of its unique raises donations for Havens Hospice, in advance of a final charity auction in September.

Last week, Wilson James was honoured once again to be invited to the Natural History Museum annual summer party.

To open the evening’s festivities, NHM Director Dr Doug Gurr gave a speech to all the guests gathered in the beautiful Hintze Hall.

With Hope the blue whale taking centre stage, suspended majestically above us, Dr Gurr started his speech with a heartfelt appreciation for the whole team at Wilson James. After encouraging everyone to cheer their support, he went on to comment ‘Wilson James, the team that has all of our backs, all of the time’.

As is tradition at this celebration, the Museum also presented their highly coveted ‘NHM Hero’ awards.

The recipients of the awards are voted for by the entire workforce at the Museum, and 5 well deserving staff received an award in recognition of their outstanding service to the Museum. The 5 recipients were shortlisted from no less than 75 nominations!

In what was undoubtedly a standout moment of my tenure at the Museum, when Dr Gurr announced first place, the name he called was none other than our very own WJ Security Officer Bhojbahadur Gharti (Bhoj).

The applause that followed was rapturous and seemed to last forever. Such is the popularity of Bhoj who has been an integral member of our team since WJ commenced the contract back in in 2011.

This recognition is so well deserved, and testament to both Bhoj’s dedication to his exemplary customer service, and NHM’s commitment to an inclusive workplace where partnership is promoted as the heart of our joint service ethos.

Bhoj, you made us all very proud. Thank you for everything you do. It was such a wonderful moment to see your team celebrate with you.

WJ would also like to congratulate all the staff who were recognised for their contribution on the night.

Lastly, it would be amiss of me not to give special mention to our staff who were diligently working the event and keeping us all safe, Donald, Mahri, and the entire team. Thank you.

Peter Griffin
