{"id":15637,"date":"2021-02-17T11:24:10","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T11:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wilsonjames.co.uk\/?p=15637"},"modified":"2021-04-07T11:31:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T10:31:35","slug":"moving-city-hall-from-central-london-to-the-royal-docks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilsonjames.co.uk\/moving-city-hall-from-central-london-to-the-royal-docks","title":{"rendered":"Moving City Hall from Central London to The Royal Docks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">On 3rd November 2020, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, confirmed plans to relocate London\u2019s City Hall and the seat of the Greater London Authority (GLA) from Central London to the Royal Docks.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The plans, first raised last June, will see the Mayor action a break clause negotiated into the 25-year lease, signed in 2001, and will see much of GLA\u2019s staff move from their offices near Tower Bridge to The Crystal in 2021, a building already owned by the GLA.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The move is largely in response to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as what the Mayor has referred to as inadequate funding of local and regional government in government, leaving the GLA with a \u2018\u00a3500m financial black hole\u2019\u00a0as a result of\u00a0diminished income from council tax and business rates.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/press-releases\/mayoral\/mayor-confirms-relocation-of-city-hall\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0In addition to this, St Martins, the current sites Kuwaiti-owned landlord, is predicted to raise rent to \u00a39.6m a year, with further expenses including business rates and running costs adding another \u00a33m on top. When considering these\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">expenses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the Mayor has said that he \u2018cannot justify remaining at our current expensive office\u2019 when savings can protect frontline public services and provide investment towards London\u2019s economic recovery.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/sadiq-khan-confirms-city-hall-move-east-end-b43379.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The move to The Crystal is expected to save \u00a361m over five years, even when factoring in the \u00a33.6m needed to install adequate security measures, due to the building already being owned by the authority and its \u2018exemplar\u2019 example of sustainable design, meaning it is also cheaper to run.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-54783565\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">3<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0It is hoped the move to East London will bring benefits to the surrounding area too and to \u2018act as a catalyst for the regeneration of Royal Docks\u2019, an area set to see 25,000 new homes and 60,000 new jobs within the next 20 years.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/press-releases\/mayoral\/mayor-confirms-relocation-of-city-hall\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">4<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Relocation to The Crystal is also hoped to encourage the popularity of the much maligned crossed-river cable\u00a0car, and\u00a0is also close in proximity to a station on the Elizabeth line and Crossrail route due to open in 2022.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Whilst moving to East London will ensure savings, some have been critical of its location outside of Central London and have warned that this could result in a recline to the institution\u2019s role.
