Update on Industrial Action at the Science and Natural History Museums

28th October 2024

Our commitment to fair employment practices and transparent negotiations

Wilson James would like to provide an update regarding the industrial action being undertaken by our security personnel at the Science Museum and Natural History Museum, who are valued employees and members of our outsourced arrangement with the Museums Consortium.

As a service provider recognised by the Living Wage Foundation, Wilson James is clear in its commitment to fair compensation for all employees. We work to engage in transparent and respectful negotiations with both our clients and union representatives to ensure that employee concerns are addressed constructively and with the utmost regard for their wellbeing and fair treatment.

Our security team members play an essential role in maintaining the safety and security of the museum’s collections, which are treasured elements of free-to-access public institutions. The decision by the museums to outsource services to Wilson James does not diminish the critical importance of our employees’ contributions to museum operations. We recognise their dedication and the vital part they play in the museum community, helping protect national treasures and ensure a welcoming environment for all visitors.

Wilson James acknowledges recent statements provided by the union, United Voices of the World (UVW), including claims related to the use of agency workers during the strikes. We want to clarify that, in adherence to our lawful employment practices, no agency workers will be engaged in duties that would otherwise be covered by our striking colleagues. We firmly believe the proposed prosecution by UVW lacks any factual or legal foundation, and we are fully confident in our compliance with applicable employment law.

In pursuit of a swift and constructive resolution, we are calling upon UVW to call off the industrial action and join us in a meaningful dialogue on union recognition. Such a dialogue would enable UVW to effectively represent its members in forthcoming pay negotiations, allowing us to collaboratively address pay adjustments for the coming year.

Wilson James remains fully committed to ensuring a secure, respectful, and fair working environment for all employees and stakeholders. Our priority is to achieve a balanced outcome that recognises the needs and contributions of our employees while upholding the quality of service at these important national institutions.
